For Engineering Managers
The work that defines your job never shows up in a sprint board: the feedback conversation you’ve been rehearsing in the shower for three weeks, the promo case that needs evidence you didn’t write down, the team member whose trajectory quietly worries you. Management work is invisible by default — to your own manager, and on bad weeks, to you. The guilt of the avoided conversation is real, and so is the Sunday-night blank when the perf-review form asks what you accomplished this year.
bettersense is a memory and a forcing function for exactly this work.
Your starter kit
Section titled “Your starter kit”Five skills. The rest can wait.
| When it fires | What it does for you | |
|---|---|---|
one-on-one-prep | ”I have a 1:1 with X tomorrow” | Builds the agenda from the relationship and the moment — and reads your past reflections on that person, so nothing gets dropped. |
feedback-frameworks | Any “how do I tell them that…” draft | COIN structure plus the SOLID pressure-test. Catches “you’ve been dismissive” (a character label) and pushes you to the observable behavior that actually lands. |
stakeholder-reflect | Ten minutes after a meaty 1:1 | A dated reflection on a report, peer, or your manager — the raw material every future prep, promo case, and hard conversation draws on. |
wins-log | ”We shipped it” / “I handled it” | Your brag doc, structured (situation, action, impact, evidence) so wins-curate can turn it into a self-eval or promo packet later without inventing anything. |
weekly | Friday, 15 minutes | Wins captured, the most-overdue reflection done, patterns surfaced. One ritual instead of four scattered habits. |
A week with bettersense
Section titled “A week with bettersense”Monday. Standup happens. Your senior engineer cuts off a junior mid-sentence — third time this month. You’ve noticed; you’ve said nothing. Tonight you type one paragraph about it. feedback-frameworks pushes back on your first draft (“dismissive” is a label, not a behavior) until you have the Tuesday-and-Thursday specifics that won’t trigger a defensive spiral.
Tuesday. The 1:1. one-on-one-prep built the agenda last night — including a flag from your reflections that this person asked about growth twice in the last quarter and you haven’t followed up.
Friday, 3pm. /bettersense:weekly. The hard conversation happened and landed — that’s a win (category: judgment), logged in ninety seconds. Most-overdue reflection: your own manager, whom you haven’t thought deliberately about in six weeks. Two minutes. A pattern surfaces: three of your four reports have raised scope confusion since the reorg. That’s not three people problems — that’s one team problem. Next week’s agenda writes itself.
